MACHAME ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The Machame Route is known as the "Whiskey Route" and is the second most popular route on the mountain. The trek begins in the south-west area of the mountain. The descent is down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain.

Because of the ascent in the west and descent down the north, Machame offers great panorama of Mount Kilimanjaro. Additionally, Machame visits stunning places such as Shira Plateau, Barranco, and Lava Tower. Machame is ideal for those who want a more difficult climb, and are confident in their ability to hike over extended periods of time on sometimes steep terrain. The accommodation on the way up and down is strictly camping (mobile tents) only.

Meet in Arusha, after breakfast departs with lunch box, from a hotel to Machame gate, registration is done and thereafter start ascent. Pass through rainforest to the Machame Campsite for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast leave the glades of rainforest with lunch box and continue ascending by crossing little valleys and steep rocky ridge covering with heather plants to the western side of the mountain where the camp is located. At this camp you will able to get the spectacular view of Mount Meru, Shira Plateau, Kibo Peak and Sunset then dinner and overnight at a Shira campsite.

Early after breakfast a slow walk through semi glacier and sandy areas trekking east to a junction leading to Lava tower rock 4600m for acclimatization and lunch. You will continue down to Barranco camp where is located in the bottom valley of Barranco wall, is along day but very important for acclimatization, stop for dinner and overnight.

HABITAT (ZONE): Moorland

Today is short day walk. In the morning will start climbing Barranco wall and reach 4200m for acclimatization and continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga campsite for hot lunch. After lunch you will have a bit of rest and get another acclimatization of trekking up the scree slopes towards the southern ice field. Then will return to the camp for supper and overnight.
On the 6 day itinerary, after lunch on Day 4 the itinerary omits the afternoon acclimatization trek and continues to include the Day 5 trek, with dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp.

HABITAT (ZONE): Alpine Desert

Today trek up to the Barafu ridge campsite is tough because of altitude. The walking hours is few because is steep so it need slowly walk so to avoid fatigue as well as high altitude sickness. You will walk across alpine desert with strong cold wind blowing because there are no trees around as well as getting closer to the Kibo glaciers. Will have a hot lunch at Barafu campsite and early dinner around 1700hrs then rest until midnight when you commence for the summit.

CLIMBING AND DESCENDING TIME: 10 - 12 hours
HABITAT (ZONE): Desert and ice

The day starts around midnight with a light breakfast, and then last preparations for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Leave to the peak at 12: 00am, switchback up steep scree or possibly snow, and reach Stella Point on the crater rim at 5861m between 4 and 5am. At this point, you will have views of the fabled crater and its icecaps facing you and all spectacular all area surrounding you. Then after 1 hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the celebrated snows takes you to Kilimanjaro's true summit, Uhuru Peak. Here you will spend some time for taking photos. After your summit activities done, descend back to the Barafu Huts campsite, have a hot lunch, rest, collect your equipment, and continue your walk down through moorland and heath zone to Mweka campsite, then dinner and overnight at Mweka campsite.

After breakfast, you will descend down to Mweka gate walking across Montane forest this descent will take 3-4 hours. Today is your last day on the mountain. At the gate you will have a hot lunch, then sign out and drive to a hotel in Arusha for certificate, presentation and commemoration.
